Photos that get a reply

What a useful dating photo shows, what to crop out, and why a gallery of professional shots is a warning sign.

One recent photo of your face is enough to start a flirt. People answer when they can picture who is writing. A clear picture in daylight does more than a dark shot, a hat pulled down, or a photo from a night out ten years ago.

Crop other people out, and crop children out completely. Crop a workplace badge, a house number, and a number plate. A second photo is useful if it is ordinary: you on a walk, you at a table. A grid of twenty is not more charming. It usually means the current face is hard to find.

You do not need a photographer. A flirt is not an audition. If someone asks for a different kind of photo before they have had a normal conversation, you can ignore it. When someone asks for photos is that request. A profile made only of studio shots is a warning, and spotting a fake profile explains why.

The photo that gets a reply is the one that looks like you this year. Use that, and leave the rest for later, if you want to send it at all.
